Yum Yai

Open Tues-Sun for Dinner

We’ve now only got a short list of restaurants to go on our Thair review tour (I think this one is number 36)! On our last Henley Beach Road quest we walked past this little place, which I think is fairly new. There seems to be quite a few Asian restaurants on this stretch of road! It used to be a Greek restaurant and you can tell it’s open for business by it’s ultra bright LED signage out the front … you just can’t miss it. So just how Yum will this Thai be? Let’s find out!

Final Score: 7.0/10

Tom Yum Beef Stir Fry

Ah, Thai food … how you’ve recently become my flavour of the month. At home I have been enjoying cooking you as my weekly work lunchboxes. Seriously, there are so many dishes that you wouldn’t get sick of it! I think I’ll be a bit sad when this is over. I enjoyed this edition of food reviews more than any other.

This place is new. They don’t even have a website up yet, and it’s really hard to find any details regarding their opening hours. if you try to call them, be aware that they aren’t open on Mondays and I think they are only open for specific times during winter (which is kind of weird…). Fresh coats of paint line the walls along with bits and pieces of Thai pictures and statues here and there which add a nice dash of spice to the place. The general layout and feel of this place is in between a modern cafe and restaurant, but unfortunately didn’t feel as warming or as fun as places like Tongue Thai’d. The tables and chairs were all neatly laid out and everyone noticed that the chairs were extremely comfortable! Overall nice and neat but definitely nothing especially memorable.

Service here is like any other stock standard cafe or small restaurant. Like a Hyundai Getz, it’s a no-frills get the job done kind of reception. Don’t get me wrong, the waitresses did their job sufficiently, but the slow food journey (even though the restaurant didn’t have many passengers … erm, I mean diners) took about 40 minutes to start getting mains out which was pretty disappointing. I saw a couple of friends walk in and wait for about 30 mintes for two takeaway containers!

Perhaps the quality of food is going to be so awesomely delectable because they took so long to make my “best dish”? Well, it would have to be the best ever stir fry ever created to take almost 30 minutes to cook! Tom Yum is a great Thai flavour which most people are familiar with … and I haven’t seen many places offer it as a stir fry dish. I have to say, the dish wasn’t that bad although not overly exciting or adventurous for their “best dish”. The beef was a bit chewy but aside from that the true savoury and sour taste from the Tom Yum sauce was very enjoyable. What I must highlight is that the sauce wasn’t overpoweringly sour which Tom Yum paste can easily turn a dish into! Lots of acidity in the sauce from the Tom Yum paste with the savoury fish sauce complemented well with the beef. My only other gripe is the serving size was edging below average size … it was like they had spread out an amount of food onto a large plate to try and make it seem large, and I wasn’t the only one to make this comment.

So there’s some pluses and minuses I’ve discovered from this place. If you have done (or are currently doing) your tax return, it’s kinda like paying tax and calculating your deductions … unfortunately there aren’t too many offsets to be applied. The place is nice and neat but unfortunately for us tonight it took a while for food to come out. The food itself was OK and I guess if you aren’t a big eater, then it’s just the right size for you. This place is a Hyundai Getz with some nice seat covers and with that nice new-car smell and LED lights on the bonnet. It gets you from A to B quite economically but don’t expect too much else.

  • Service [6.3/10] : No frills service but food was kinda slow.
  • Quality [7.0/10] : Good flavours but the beef was pretty tough.
  • Venue [7.7/10] : Nice and neat, chairs were comfortable!
  • Value [7.0/10] : $15 for my dish isn’t bad, but there’s better out there …
